Registration, Attendance, & Participation

Attendance

To receive an official certificate of completion for Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center courses, the following industry standards must be met:

  • All required prework must be completed in advance of course
  • Required field trips must be attended
  • Cumulative absences exceeding 5% of the total instructional time may result in failure of completion
  • Absences from any portion of a course must be discussed with the instructor

Participation

Students shall optimize the learning environment for themselves and their colleagues by:

  • Silencing all electronic devices and turning off vibrate mode
  • Refraining from the use of electronic devises to conduct other business while in the classroom

Cancellation

Participants enrolled in tuition-based courses will be charged the full amount of tuition if they withdraw less than eight weeks in advance of the course.

Course-Specific Registration Information

National Wilderness Leadership Training Course (hosted annually)

Nominations and selections are handled through agency and Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center representatives. Contact the Carhart Center at 406-243-4682 for further details.

Regional Wilderness Stewardship Training Courses

Registration information for individual training courses is posted online and distributed through agency channels three or four months in advance of the training course date.

Unit Wilderness Workshops

To request a unit workshop please follow your agency procedures: 

BLM - Field Office (unit) workshops are 1- or 2-day sessions that address a variety of topics from the fundamentals of stewardship to detailed discussions about site-specific issues. The workshops are tailored for all employees of an office to meet the needs of the wilderness area or areas managed by the office where the training is presented. There is no cost to the Field Office. To request that a Unit Wilderness Workshop come to your office, contact the Wilderness Program Lead in your State Office. 

FWS - Refuge Wilderness (unit) workshops are 1 - 2 day sessions that address a variety of topics from basic wilderness awareness and the fundamentals of stewardship to agency policy and guidelines or detailed discussions about site-specific issues. The workshops are tailored for all employees of a refuge to meet the needs of the wilderness area managed by the refuge. There is no fee to attend the workshop, and the cost of presenting the workshop is generally covered by the regional office or shared between the regional office and the refuge. For more information or to request unit workshops contact the Carhart Center FWS Representative, Michelle Reilly, at 406-243-4627 or michelle_reilly@fws.gov.

FS - Forest (unit) workshops are 1, 2, or 3 day sessions that address a variety of topics from basic wilderness awareness and the fundamentals of stewardship to detailed discussions about the 10-Year Wilderness Stewardship Challenge or site-specific issues. The workshops are tailored to meet the needs of the forest and region and are provided free at a location identified by the forest. For more information about forest workshops contact the Carhart Center FS Representative, Dan Abbe, at 603-348-0212 or james.abbe@usda.gov.

NPS - (unit) workshops are 2 day sessions that address a variety of topics from basic wilderness awareness and the fundamentals of stewardship to detailed discussions about site-specific issues. The workshops are tailored for all park staff, volunteers, partners, researchers, nearby parks and invited adjacent land management agencies.
