The presentation will be centered on how the National Park Service and the Hoonah Indian Association worked together on the planning effort for Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve's recent Backcountry and Wilderness Management Plan. Our presenters are:

  • Adrienne Lindholm - NPS Alaska Wilderness Program Coordinator & Alaska National Natural Landmark Coordinator & Alaska Wild and Scenic Rivers Program Co-Coordinator
  • Darlene See - Cultural Program Manager, Hoonah Indian Association
  • Mary Beth Moss - Tribal Liaison/Cultural Anthropologist, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve
  • Sara Doyle - Outdoor Recreation Planner, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

After watching the webinar, you can explore the following resources to delve deeper into this topic:

  • Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (nps.gov) - The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve website features a link to “Healing Across the Waters: The Huna Tlingit Journey Back to Glacier Bay Homeland," a 32-minute film that shares the long, sometimes painful, sometimes joyous journey of healing between the National Park Service and the Hoonah Indian Association.
  • Glacier Bay National Park Backcountry and Wilderness Management Plan (nps.gov) - At Glacier Bay National Park, managers recognize that the continued relationship of the Tlingit with their Homeland is as much a part of the wilderness character of Glacier Bay as the glaciers, the bears, and the opportunity for an unconstrained experience. This webpage hosts links for a management plan for Glacier Bay's Wilderness, a landscape that has supported humans since time immemorial, focusing on enhancing relationships between the agency and traditional people through collaboration on the cultural and natural stewardship of Glacier Bay Wilderness.
  • International Journal of Wilderness December 2023 (ijw.org) - Link to an article sharing the work of the National Park Service to reimagine a more inclusive wilderness concept using a case study of Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska by Adrienne Lindholm, National Park Service Alaska Region Wilderness Program Manager.
  • Reimagining Wilderness (nps.gov) - One-page article describing how the NPS in Alaska is reimagining the wilderness concept to be more inclusive.
